Edward VI was King of England and Ireland from 1547 to 1553, the only surviving legitimate son of Henry VIII by Jane Seymour. He ascended the throne as a child and was the first English monarch educated according to Protestant principles, a stance that decisively shaped his religious policies. Since he never reached majority, government was carried out by a regency council, initially led by his uncle the Duke of Somerset and later by John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland. Those administrations faced severe economic problems and social unrest, which erupted into popular uprisings in 1549. In foreign affairs, his reign saw an expensive war against Scotland, with early gains that were later tempered by withdrawals and peace agreements. In religion, reforms established lasting Protestant practices: the end of clerical celibacy, the use of English in worship, and a revised communion rite. When he fell ill in 1553, Edward sought to secure the succession for a Protestant heir by naming Lady Jane Grey, a move that provoked a contest and, after his death, led to a temporary Catholic restoration under Mary. Edward’s brief reign left an important legacy in the early consolidation of the English Reformation.
