Umberto I, King of Italy from 1878 until his assassination in 1900, was a central figure of the House of Savoy during the period of consolidation of the Italian state after unification. Son and successor of Victor Emmanuel II, he received a military education and distinguished himself in the independence wars, ascending the throne with a posture aimed at reinforcing national unity—most notably by permitting his father’s burial in the Pantheon in Rome. In foreign affairs, Umberto supported the Triple Alliance with Germany and Austria-Hungary and promoted colonial expansion in the Horn of Africa, with occupations in Eritrea and Somalia, although the imperial project suffered a decisive setback at the defeat of Adwa (1896). His foreign policy also included Italian participation in international actions, such as the contingent sent to the Levant during the Boxer uprising. Domestically, his reign was marked by rising social tensions: uneven industrialization, the advance of socialist ideas and government repression. His bestowal of honors on General Bava Beccaris, responsible for the bloody suppression in Milan (1898), made Umberto the target of strong left-wing opposition and anarchist attacks. He was killed in Monza by Gaetano Bresci, an episode that ended a controversial reign and left a conflicted legacy regarding the monarchy, public order and national aspirations.
