Friedrich I, of the Hohenzollern dynasty, was Elector of Brandenburg (1688–1713) and elevated the Duchy of Prussia to a kingdom, becoming the first King in Prussia (1701–1713). His rise reflected diplomatic skill: he negotiated with Emperor Leopold I for recognition of the royal title as part of alliances against France in the War of the Spanish Succession, while preserving the delicate legal fiction that his kingship applied only to Prussia. During his reign he undertook a courtly and institutional reorganization of the state: he founded academies and was a patron of the arts and sciences, establishing the Academy of Arts in Berlin (1696) and the Academy of Sciences (1700). He also promoted urban development, creating the Friedrichstadt adjacent to Berlin. Militarily, he drew Brandenburg–Prussia closer to the anti‑French powers, commanded troops in campaign and even captured Bonn in 1689. His practice of hiring out Prussian contingents to allies earned him, among some successors, the reputation of a mercenary king. Legacy: he created institutional and dynastic foundations that enabled the subsequent expansion of Prussian power, preparing the ground for greater centralization and prestige achieved by his son and, above all, his grandson Frederick II.
