Carol I (Karl Eitel Friedrich) was prince and later the first king of Romania, reigning from 1866 to 1914. A member of the Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen house of German origin, he became head of state at a moment of great instability, when the country’s unification and independence were at stake. His arrival spurred the adoption of the 1866 Constitution, regarded as progressive for its time, which helped modernize institutions and consolidate the state. A military-trained and reserved figure, Carol played a central role in asserting Romanian sovereignty, particularly during and after the Russo–Turkish War (1877–1878), when independence was recognized and Romania proceeded to expand and integrate its territory. He promoted infrastructure projects and national symbols — among them Peleș Castle and the first bridge over the Danube linking Dobruja to the rest of the country. His long reign established the Hohenzollern dynasty in Romania and raised the country’s international standing. Near the end of his life, disagreements over foreign policy at the outbreak of World War I exposed the tension between his German origins and Romanian public opinion, a factor that influenced the succession and the nation’s subsequent course.
