Charles Emmanuel IV (Carlo Emanuele Ferdinando Maria di Savoia) was King of Sardinia from 1796 to 1802, succeeding his father Victor Amadeus III. His reign coincided with the escalation of the French Revolutionary Wars, a period in which the kingdom’s influence on the continent declined: after the Treaty of Paris (1796) French troops obtained free passage through Piedmont and, in 1798, the occupation of Turin forced him to withdraw to the island of Sardinia. Married to Marie Clotilde of France from 1775, he maintained a personally affectionate marriage, though they had no children. His wife’s death in 1802 was the decisive factor in his abdication in favor of his brother Victor Emmanuel I; he nevertheless retained the personal title of king. Exiled in the south and later resident in Rome and Frascati, he lived as a guest of aristocratic families and drew closer to conservative Catholic circles. In 1815 he entered the Society of Jesus as a novice, without receiving priestly orders, and spent the remainder of his life tied to religious life. He died at the Palazzo Colonna in 1819 and was buried in the church of Sant'Andrea al Quirinale. His legacy is marked by the loss of Piedmontese territories to France and by the transfer of his political role to his brother during the turbulent Napoleonic period.
