Peter I Karađorđević was monarch of Serbia (1903–1918) and, from 1 December 1918, King of the Serbs, Croats and Slovenes until his death in 1921. The son of Alexander Karađorđević, he grew up in exile and built a military and intellectual career in France, where he studied at military academies, fought in the Franco‑Prussian War with the French Foreign Legion, and translated liberal works into Serbian. As king, he was known for defending a constitutional regime and for liberal policies that expanded political and press freedoms, fostering a period of cultural and economic prosperity often called the “golden age.” He also served as commander‑in‑chief of the Royal Serbian Army during the Balkan Wars, which consolidated his national reputation as “King Peter the Liberator.” His life included participation in Balkan uprisings against the Ottoman Empire under the nom de guerre Petar Mrkonjić, and direct experience in guerrilla operations and conventional battles. The combination of military prestige, an image of liberal leadership and dynastic inheritance made him a central figure in Serbia’s transition to the new Yugoslav state and left a lasting legacy in the national memory.
