John V of Portugal, nicknamed “the Magnanimous” and sometimes called the “Portuguese Sun King,” reigned from 1706 to 1750. The son of King Peter II and Maria Sophia of Neuburg, he sought to raise the kingdom’s international standing through ostentatious diplomacy, European alliances and relations with the Holy See, projecting the image of a cultured absolutist monarchy. His reign was marked by intensive building activity and patronage: he financed major works such as the Mafra Palace, the Águas Livres Aqueduct and the Joanina Library, and enriched collections that now form part of the national holdings. He encouraged historical and linguistic studies and established religious and cultural institutions that shaped the kingdom’s ecclesiastical and intellectual administration. The discovery and influx of Brazilian gold were decisive for Portuguese politics and the economy during his government, funding his foreign ambitions and the royal apparatus. In diplomatic terms, the Treaty of Madrid (1750) and relations with powers such as Austria and Great Britain reflect his navigation of colonial and European interests. Despite the splendour and the building programme, the end of his reign showed signs of internal stagnation; politically he left an ambiguous legacy, combining cultural modernization with vulnerabilities that would affect the economy in the future.
