Edward VIII, later known as the Duke of Windsor, was monarch of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions for less than a year in 1936. The eldest son of George V, he became prominent before his coronation as Prince of Wales and for his military service in the First World War, which brought him public recognition and a degree of popularity among veterans. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s he represented the royal family on numerous tours across the Empire, becoming a widely photographed figure and a symbol of aristocratic charm.
His short reign was dominated by a constitutional crisis caused by his intention to marry the American Wallis Simpson, who was divorced—an intention that conflicted with the role of the monarch as head of the Church of England and with the government’s political consensus. Faced with the prospect of destabilizing the constitutional system, he abdicated in favor of his brother, who took the throne as George VI.
After abdicating he received the title Duke of Windsor and married Wallis Simpson; the couple spent much of their lives abroad. Allegations about his political sympathies and a visit to Germany in 1937 tarnished his reputation, and during the Second World War he served in colonial posts before withdrawing to private life in France, where he spent his final years.
