Reinhold Niebuhr was an American theologian and public intellectual whose work influenced theology, political philosophy, and international relations in the twentieth century. A professor for more than three decades at Union Theological Seminary, he was known as a leading exponent of Christian realism and a critic of both utopianism and the naïve optimism of the social gospel. His analyses of sin, self‑love, and humanity’s tendency toward power became central in books such as Moral Man and Immoral Society and The Nature and Destiny of Man. Niebuhr also wrote The Irony of American History, which expresses his critical interpretation of the United States’ development, and he is often linked with Hans Morgenthau in the development of American political realism. His influence extended beyond academia: politicians, activists, and religious leaders cited his ideas, and his work has been recognized among the major books of the twentieth century. A prominent figure in public debate in the 1940s and 1950s, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1964. He is also credited with authoring the Serenity Prayer, widely circulated in religious movements and circles. Niebuhr’s legacy remains present in discussions of public ethics, politics, and the tensions between idealism and reality.
