Rémy de Gourmont was a French Symbolist poet, novelist and literary critic whose work marked the turn of the 19th to the 20th century. Born into a family of publishers, he rose to prominence as a contributor and one of the founders of Mercure de France, the magazine emblematic of Symbolism, and coedited the journal L'Ymagier, devoted to wood engraving. His intellectual career combined critical writing with literary production in both prose and verse.
As an essayist he became known for Le Problème du Style, an influential work on the theory of style that resonated beyond France and was admired by figures such as T. S. Eliot and Ezra Pound. His articles and pamphlets also addressed political and cultural issues: the piece Le Joujou Patriotisme argued for an aesthetic reconciliation between France and Germany, a stance that cost him his position at the Bibliothèque nationale.
In fiction and poetry he explored themes drawn from Schopenhauerian idealism, subjectivity and the tension between sexuality and artistic creation; novels like Sixtine and poems collected in Litanies de la Rose and Divertissements reflect these concerns. Despite health problems that removed him from public life, his work influenced generations of writers and helped spread Symbolist and imagist sensibilities in European literature.
