Therese Neumann, also known as Resl von Konnersreuth, was a German Catholic mystic of the early twentieth century, remembered mainly for reports of stigmata and alleged miraculous healings. Born and raised in a Bavarian village, she joined the Third Order of Saint Francis and gained national attention by claiming to have recovered her sight and to have been freed from paralysis and severe wounds in circumstances she attributed to divine intervention. Beginning in 1926 Neumann reported suffering the wounds of Christ’s Passion: the appearance of wounds on her hands, feet and chest, episodes of bleeding, and prolonged visions of the Passion and the Resurrection. Her phenomena drew lay observers, clergy and physicians and provoked intense controversy. Contemporary clinical reports and later studies raised doubts about the authenticity of the signs, noting inconsistencies and suspicious behavior during examinations. In addition to the stigmata, Neumann claimed long periods of inedia, which provoked scientific and religious debate about her case. Today she is an ambiguous figure in the history of mystical phenomena: admired by many devotees and treated with skepticism by physicians and historians. Since 2005 she has been designated a Servant of God in church proceedings, which has kept academic and devotional interest in her life and legacy alive.
