Rex William Stewart was a prominent American jazz cornetist, best known for his long tenure with Duke Ellington’s orchestra, where he played for eleven years beginning in 1934. His contributions included co-writing pieces such as "Boy Meets Horn" and "Morning Glory," and supervising recordings by fellow band members, revealing an artistic role beyond solo performance. Before joining Ellington, Stewart performed with major ensembles of the era, including those led by Fletcher Henderson, Elmer Snowden and McKinney's Cotton Pickers, and at one point led a big band at the Empire Ballroom in New York. After leaving the orchestra, he led small swing groups well suited to his improvisational style and toured internationally with the Jazz at the Philharmonic project. In the 1950s he broadened his work into radio, television and music criticism, writing for outlets such as the Los Angeles Times, Playboy and DownBeat; the collection Jazz Masters of the Thirties gathers part of his critical output. He also worked as a studio musician, appeared on television programs and films, and left a discography that includes collaborations with artists like Jack Teagarden and Cootie Williams. His life included episodes beyond music: he lived in France to study cooking at Le Cordon Bleu, ran modest businesses and, in his later years, lived in Los Angeles near his children, where he returned to play in jam sessions with former Ellington colleagues.
