Richard F. Gordon Jr. was a U.S. Navy officer, test pilot and NASA astronaut, known for his career during the golden age of the space race. As pilot of Gemini 11 (1966) he set altitude records and performed extravehicular activities; in 1969 he served as command module pilot on Apollo 12, orbiting the Moon 45 times while his crewmates landed and photographing potential sites for future missions. Over his flying career he logged more than 4,500 hours, about 3,500 of them in jets, and took part in early development work on aircraft such as the F4H-1 Phantom II.
After the missions he worked in the administration of the Astronaut Office and headed advanced programs, contributing to the preliminary design of the space shuttle. He retired from the Navy and NASA in 1972 and applied his experience in the private sector: he held executive positions in energy, engineering and space technology firms and served as president of Astro Sciences Corporation.
Gordon received distinguished technical and aeronautical honors, was a member of professional societies and chaired charitable efforts, remaining involved with organizations such as the Boy Scouts and health institutions. His legacy includes contributions to lunar exploration, the advancement of cutting‑edge aviation and the development of subsequent space programs.
