Richard Matheson was an American novelist, short‑story writer, and screenwriter whose work shaped 20th‑century fantasy, horror, and science fiction. Known for twist endings and stories that turn everyday life into scenes of paranoia, he wrote short pieces such as "Duel" and "Third from the Sun," as well as longer classics like The Shrinking Man and I Am Legend, works widely adapted for film and television. As a screenwriter he played an important role in pop culture: he contributed memorable episodes to series such as The Twilight Zone and Star Trek, wrote the teleplay Duel that launched Steven Spielberg’s career, and created the character Kolchak, a forerunner of modern televised horror. His ability to fuse moral dilemmas faced by ordinary characters with futuristic elements made his plots both accessible and unsettling. Matheson also worked across a variety of genres—from the Old West to psychological suspense—and adapted or scripted several film versions of his novels, including Stir of Echoes, What Dreams May Come, and Hell House.
