Richard Rado was a German-born mathematician who worked chiefly in combinatorics and graph theory. After earning his doctorate in 1933 under the supervision of Issai Schur, he emigrated to Britain to escape the Nazi regime and built his career at institutions including Cambridge, Sheffield, King’s College London and the University of Reading, where he taught until his retirement in 1971.
A frequent collaborator of Paul Erdős, Rado made decisive contributions to partition calculus in Ramsey theory, extending results such as van der Waerden’s theorem. He also worked on problems related to Hall’s marriage theorem, matroid theory and structural questions in vector spaces, showing a facility for turning particular cases into optimal general statements.
Acknowledged by the mathematical community, he received the Senior Berwick Prize in 1972, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1978 and was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Free University of Berlin. His name is preserved by a prize that honors the best theses in discrete mathematics awarded by the German Mathematical Society.
