Richard Sharpe Shaver was an American writer and artist who rose to prominence after World War II through stories published in science fiction magazines, especially Amazing Stories. He became known for recounting personal experiences with an underground civilization possessing fantastic technology; these accounts, promoted by editor Ray Palmer as “The Shaver Mystery,” were presented on the border between fiction and alleged fact, provoking major controversy among readers and critics.
Beyond his literary output, Shaver spent the last decades of his life on what he called “rock books”: stones he claimed bore images and readable texts left by ancient races. He produced paintings inspired by those stones and photographed his finds extensively, activities that contributed to a posthumous reassessment of him as an artist. His visual work was exhibited in cities such as Los Angeles and New York.
Throughout his life he experienced psychiatric hospitalizations and turbulent personal episodes that influenced his creative course. Today Shaver is remembered both for the cultural impact of his narratives—which fed myths and debates about plausibility in science fiction—and for the belated recognition of his artistic work.
