Richard M. “Rick” Romley is an American lawyer and Republican politician best known for his long tenure as county attorney for Maricopa County, Arizona. A Vietnam War veteran, he served in the United States Marine Corps, was severely wounded in combat—losing both legs—and received decorations including the Purple Heart. After recovering, he earned a degree in business administration and later a law degree from Arizona State University.
As a prosecutor, Romley became known for investigations and prosecutions with wide public impact, among them the scandal known as AzScam and the inquiry into abuses in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix, which led the local hierarchy to acknowledge responsibility. He also led the prosecution in the case of Ray Krone, whose later exoneration by DNA evidence drew criticism and controversy over how the case was handled.
After leaving office, he served as special counsel to the Arizona attorney general and as an advisor at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. He has received recognition from veterans’ organizations and remained an influential figure in the county’s legal and political affairs for decades.
