Ricky Rodriguez, born David Moses Zerby, was a central figure and a victim of a religious sect known as The Family (formerly Children of God). The son of Karen Zerby, one of the leaders, and raised under the tutelage of founder David Berg, he was assigned a messianic role within the community and was the focus of doctrinal promotion from childhood. Internal sect documents describe Rodriguez as having suffered systematic sexual abuse by adult caregivers charged with raising him; that material later circulated among former members as proof of the leadership’s practices. Those accounts and publications undermined later attempts by the organization to minimize or erase the evidence. After leaving the group, Rodriguez tried to rebuild his life outside the sect, even marrying, but he continued to struggle profoundly with his traumatic past. In 2005 he committed an act of violence against a former member who had been his caregiver in childhood and then took his own life. The case sparked broad debate about child abuse in religious organizations and has been used by researchers and activists examining manipulation, sexual exploitation, and their long-term effects on victims.
