Robert Bosch was a German engineer, inventor and industrialist, founder of the company that bears his name and a central figure in the transformation of the automotive industry in the early 20th century. He became known for inventing and developing the ignition magneto for gasoline engines, a device that accelerated the spread of motor vehicles and was used in machines such as Zeppelin engines. Later, his company introduced innovations like diesel fuel injection, contributing to the technical modernization of the sector.
In addition to his industrial work, Bosch was notable for social practices advanced for his time: he promoted vocational training, instituted an eight‑hour workday and provided benefits to employees. He was also active politically as a liberal committed to European reconciliation between the wars, directing a considerable portion of his fortune to philanthropic causes, including the establishment of the hospital that bears his name.
The Nazi period brought controversies: the company accepted military contracts and employed forced labor, while Bosch himself received honors from the regime. In his will he provided that company profits be used for charitable purposes and laid the foundations of the corporate structure that guided succession and the institutional character of the group after his death.
