Robert Boyle was an Anglo-Irish natural philosopher, chemist, physicist and inventor recognized as one of the founders of modern chemistry. His career was notable for his advocacy of the experimental method: he built his own laboratory, began publishing results in the journals of the newly founded Royal Society, and performed repeated experiments that helped establish scientific practices based on observation and testing. His best-known contribution is the law that bears his name, which describes the inverse relationship between the pressure and volume of a gas at constant temperature. Works such as The Sceptical Chymist marked a turning point by criticizing traditional chemistry and proposing atomistic ideas and a more clearly defined concept of chemical element. In addition to experiments on air, vacuum, boiling and the properties of blood, Boyle improved instruments—such as the air pump—and investigated phenomena of combustion and respiration. He also authored theological works, reflecting his deep religious interest. His legacy endures in chemistry and scientific methodology: by promoting rigorous experimentation and introducing concepts that paved the way for modern chemistry, Boyle influenced subsequent generations of scientists.
