Robert Bresson was a French filmmaker whose work became known for its aesthetic austerity and quest for an essential cinema. Trained in fine arts and philosophy, he began as a screenwriter and painter before turning to film, producing his first feature in 1943. Over four decades he built a concise filmography marked by nonprofessional actors, ellipses and an economy of means that defined his minimalist style.
His films Un condamné à mort s'est échappé, Pickpocket and Au hasard Balthazar rank among the works most often cited in major critical surveys, and titles such as Mouchette and L'Argent also achieved wide recognition. Bresson set out an authorial theory of the seventh art in Notes sur le cinématographe, a book that influenced later movements such as Dogma 95.
The technique of the “actor-model” and his rejection of conventional acting aimed to capture a more contained, interior expression, leaving the viewer to perform the emotional interiorization. Honored by the Académie Française, Bresson left a lasting legacy in modern cinema and is frequently regarded as one of the most singular and influential voices of the twentieth century.
