Robert Edwin Peary was an American polar explorer and Navy officer known for his ambition to reach the North Pole. A graduate of Bowdoin College, he spent much of his career on Arctic expeditions, studying and adopting Inuit techniques such as fur clothing, dog sleds, and igloo construction. He integrated these practices into what he called the “Peary system,” based on support parties and staged supply depots for long crossings. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Peary made significant forays into Greenland, demonstrating that it was an island and mapping previously unexplored stretches of the northern coast. His final expedition set out in 1908 and, in April 1909, he reported having reached the North Pole, planting the U.S. flag. The claim of having reached the pole became the subject of intense controversy: the absence of independent observers during the final stage, discrepancies in the reported speeds, and later reanalyses of records raised doubts about the accuracy of the achievement. Peary also published travel accounts and manuals on polar exploration, leaving a complex legacy that combines advances in exploration techniques with an unresolved historical debate.
