Robert F. Furchgott was an American biochemist whose work clarified a fundamental mechanism of cardiovascular physiology. A professor at several institutions — including Cornell, Washington University, SUNY Brooklyn and the University of Miami — Furchgott identified in 1978 a substance produced by the endothelium capable of relaxing blood vessels, which he called endothelium-derived relaxing factor (EDRF).

Over the following decade he demonstrated that EDRF was nitric oxide (NO) and described its mode of action as a transient messenger in mammalian cells. This discovery explained longstanding clinical effects, such as the therapeutic action of nitroglycerin in treating angina, and paved the way for later pharmacological applications.

For his contributions to understanding the role of NO in cellular signaling, he received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1998, shared with Louis Ignarro and Ferid Murad. His work had a wide influence on cardiovascular pharmacology and research into vascular regulation, leaving a lasting legacy in medicine and cell biology.
