Robert Hooke was a 17th-century English polymath whose work combined experimental science, engineering, and architecture. Recognized as a key figure of the Scientific Revolution, he became known for work in physics, mechanics, and empirical investigation, serving as an assistant to Robert Boyle and playing an active role in the founding of the Royal Society. His practical training and drawing skills also led him to collaborate with figures such as Christopher Wren.
In addition to his research, Hooke earned substantial income as an architect and surveyor during the reconstruction of London after the Great Fire of 1666. Projects attributed to him and to Wren—including contributions to the design of St. Paul’s Cathedral and the Monument to the Great Fire—demonstrate his role in urban redesign and the city’s practical engineering.
As an architect he designed, among other works, the new Bethlem Royal Hospital, introducing gallery arrangements and ventilation concepts that influenced hospital design for centuries. His quarrelsome personality and disputes with contemporaries, notably Isaac Newton, affected the posthumous recognition of his work.
Hooke left a lasting scientific and technical legacy, although no authenticated portrait survives; his pioneering role in experimental observation and in linking science with constructive practice remains central to the history of English science.
