The eldest son of the poet Robert Burns, Robert Burns Junior (1786–1857) was a Scottish-born civil servant and teacher from a notable family. Educated in Dumfries, he studied classical subjects in Glasgow and philosophy in Edinburgh, then spent twenty-seven years at the Stamp Office in London while supplementing his income by teaching mathematics and classics. His appointment to the office was aided by political connections, but the administrative career proved ill-suited to his temperament. Interested in music, with a good memory and literary leanings, Robert tried his hand at writing verse without achieving his father’s brilliance. He married Anne Sherwood in 1809 and had one daughter; he later lived with Emma Bland, with whom he had additional children. Financial problems and gambling led him into debt and to an early retirement in 1833, supported by a pension that acknowledged the family’s literary reputation. Back in Dumfries, he took part in local life — serving as master of the Dumfries Kilwinning Masonic Lodge — and preserved memories of domestic life with the poet. He was the last of the children to be buried in the Burns mausoleum, leaving a legacy largely tied to conserving the family memory and to the contrast between his father’s expectations and a career marked by personal and administrative difficulties.
