Robert K. Merton was a prominent American sociologist, often listed among the founders of modern sociology. He taught for decades at Columbia University, where he directed the Bureau of Applied Social Research and held major academic chairs. His work influenced both the sociology of science and social theory more broadly. Merton formulated the well-known “Mertonian theses” on science and society, arguing that religious and cultural factors—such as Puritanism—helped foster the development of modern science in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century England. He also defined normative principles for scientific practice—universalism, communism, disinterestedness, and organized skepticism—summarized by the acronym CUDOS, which became a reference in studies of scientific ethics and organization. In social theory, he developed a concept of anomie that links cultural goals to unequal access to means, identifying five possible social responses (conformity, innovation, ritualism, retreatism, and rebellion). His advocacy of “middle-range theories” aimed to bring theory closer to empirical evidence, constituting a critique of abstract functionalism and leaving a lasting influence on sociological methodology.
