Robert Wallace Malone is an American physician and biochemist whose early research in the 1980s and 1990s addressed messenger RNA (mRNA) technology, pharmacology, and drug repurposing. In experimental work at the Salk Institute and in collaboration with other researchers, he took part in studies that demonstrated the transfer of liposome‑protected mRNA into cultured cells—results cited among the early steps that later enabled the development of mRNA vaccines. Over his career Malone held academic and administrative positions at various institutions, including faculty roles at universities and executive posts in pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. He also engaged in applied research, such as investigations into treatments for Zika and proposals for clinical trials of candidate therapies against COVID‑19. Since 2021 he has become a controversial public figure by promoting claims about the safety and effectiveness of COVID‑19 vaccines that have been widely challenged by experts and media platforms. The controversy surrounding his statements and public activities is a significant part of his recent notoriety.
