Robert Nathaniel Mann was an American violinist, composer, and conductor, best known as a founding member and first violinist of the Juilliard String Quartet, a position he held for more than five decades until 1997. Under his leadership the quartet became a leading interpreter of twentieth-century chamber repertoire, giving around 5,000 concerts, performing over 600 works — including about 100 premieres — and building a large recorded catalogue that earned them three Grammy Awards.
Beyond his career as a performer, Mann was also active as a composer, writing more than 30 narrative pieces and works for various ensembles, among them a Fantasy for Orchestra performed by major orchestras and a Duo for Violin and Piano premiered at Carnegie Hall. His solo discography includes recordings of Bartók, Beethoven, Mozart, and contemporary works.
As a teacher and mentor, Mann served on the faculty of the Manhattan School of Music and worked closely with numerous string ensembles, guiding generations of quartets and soloists. He also founded and directed youth programs and held positions in musical institutions and foundations, receiving multiple honors and honorary degrees over the course of his career.
