Robert Pershing Wadlow was an American known worldwide as the “Alton Giant” or the “Giant of Illinois,” notable for holding the medical record for the greatest height ever documented. Born and raised in Alton, Illinois, Wadlow reached approximately 2.72–2.74 m in adulthood due to pituitary hypertrophy and excessive production of somatotropin, a condition that caused continuous growth until his death at 22. Despite physical limitations—he relied on crutches and had reduced sensation in his legs and feet—Wadlow maintained a public presence: he took part in promotional tours, including appearances with the Ringling Brothers Circus and with INTERCO, which made him a national celebrity. His stature also produced additional records for hand and foot size. Wadlow’s life and death drew widespread public attention; some 40,000 people attended his funeral, and his memory is preserved in statues, museum replicas, and cultural references in music. His legacy remains connected to medical history and to how society remembers people of exceptional height.
