Robert Alexander Watson‑Watt was a Scottish electrical engineer and inventor, widely recognized as a central figure in the development of radar. Working in British research establishments during the 1920s and 1930s, he led projects that turned early studies of radio detection — such as observations of storm emissions — into practical systems for aerial surveillance. Under his leadership, from the mid-1930s onward the first detection and tracking stations were built and installed; these evolved into the network known as Chain Home, covering England’s east and south coasts. That network provided early warning of air incursions and played a decisive role in Britain’s defense at the start of the Second World War, contributing to the RAF’s victory in the Battle of Britain. Watson‑Watt also organized and directed research centres such as Bawdsey and assembled teams that rapidly adapted existing components to speed the system’s operational deployment. His work marked the shift from scientific experiment to effective military technology, leaving a lasting legacy in radio‑detection techniques and modern air defense.
