Roberto Calvi was an Italian banker best known for chairing Banco Ambrosiano, an institution at the center of one of Italy’s largest financial and political scandals in the 1970s and 1980s. His work placed him in close contact with religious and financial circles, earning him in the press the nickname “God’s Banker.” The collapse of Banco Ambrosiano revealed irregular accounting practices, hidden debts and links to actors operating across financial, political and clandestine spheres, prompting intense investigation and public controversy. Calvi’s death, when his body was found in London in 1982, became a landmark case: initially treated as suicide, it underwent successive inquiries and forensic reviews that found signs consistent with homicide. Allegations involving the Vatican bank, the Italian mafia and the masonic lodge Propaganda Due formed part of the range of hypotheses investigated. The affair had lasting repercussions in Italy, fueling debate about bank governance, financial transparency and the influence of parallel networks on the country’s economy and politics, while keeping Calvi’s divisive memory alive in Italian financial history.
