Ronnie Barker was an English actor, comedian and writer whose career shaped much of British television comedy in the 1960s and 1970s. He rose to prominence in satirical and variety shows and won national recognition on The Frost Report, and above all for his partnership with Ronnie Corbett on The Two Ronnies, a sketch series that remained popular for more than a decade.
Outside the duo, Barker made a name for himself in highly popular individual roles: the convict Norman Stanley Fletcher in Porridge and the shopkeeper Arkwright in Open All Hours are examples of characters that cemented his reputation as an interpreter of observational and character comedy. He also worked in radio and theatre and wrote much of his own material, often under pseudonyms to avoid prejudice about his authorship.
A multiple BAFTA winner and recipient of an OBE, Barker left a lasting legacy in British comedy through both his comic timing and his gift for creating memorable characters. After a period of less successful work in the 1980s, he gradually withdrew from the stage while continuing to exert significant influence on subsequent generations of comedians.
