Ross Macdonald, the pen name of Kenneth Millar, became known as an author of crime novels who renewed the noir genre in postwar United States. Raised in Canada, he married fellow writer Margaret Sturm (Margaret Millar) before returning to the U.S., where he began publishing stories in magazines and released his first novel in the 1940s. His work is best known for the series starring private investigator Lew Archer, which blends classic detective work with a psychological and social approach to crime. Among the translated and frequently cited titles are The Moving Target, The Drowning Pool and The Ivory Grin, along with several other novels published between 1947 and 1976. Macdonald is recognized for probing human motivations and family conflicts, raising the crime novel to a broader reflection on guilt and memory. His work influenced later writers in the genre and established him as an important voice in twentieth‑century crime fiction.
