Rula Lenska is a British actress whose work has focused mainly on theatre and television in the United Kingdom, with occasional recognition in the United States due to television commercials in the 1970s and 1980s. She became known in the UK for roles in films and series such as Queen Kong (1976) and, later, for her portrayal of Claudia Colby in the soap opera Coronation Street (2009–11; 2018–22), as well as for notable appearances in Rock Follies (1976–77) and in various BBC television productions.
The daughter of a family of Polish origin, Lenska trained at the Webber-Douglas School of Drama and built a steady career in London theatre, performing in West End productions and at the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, among other venues. Across the 1970s and 1980s she alternated between comedy, drama and television adaptations, and also worked in radio and children’s programmes.
The international attention generated by the US commercials had a curious character: her image was presented as if she were an already established celebrity, prompting reactions in the American media. In the United Kingdom, however, Lenska’s career is defined by longevity on stage and screen, with frequent returns to both dramatic and comic roles that have cemented her presence in the British cultural scene.
