Samuel Bankman-Fried, known as SBF, is an American entrepreneur who rose to prominence in the cryptocurrency industry as the founder and CEO of the exchange FTX and the quantitative trading firm Alameda Research. Under his leadership, FTX grew rapidly, reaching daily trading volumes in the billions of dollars and attracting more than a million users, while Alameda managed arbitrage and automated trading operations from 2017 onward. Bankman-Fried’s rise placed him on Forbes’ list of billionaires in 2022, with an estimated net worth in the billions, but the mid-2022 crypto market downturn drastically reduced that value. In December 2022 he was detained in the Bahamas and later extradited to the United States, where he faced criminal charges related to fraud, money laundering, and campaign finance violations. In 2023 he was tried and convicted on multiple counts of fraud and conspiracy, resulting in a prison sentence and substantial financial liabilities. Before his fall, SBF also publicly identified with effective altruism and said he intended to devote a large portion of his wealth to philanthropic causes.
