Savitri Devi, born Maximiani Julia Portas, was a Franco‑Greek intellectual and activist who became a central figure in postwar neo‑Nazism. A writer and polemicist, she combined racial and esoteric ideas—most notably a syncretic synthesis of elements of Hinduism and Nazi ideology—and promoted Adolf Hitler as an almost mythic figure within that politicized religious framework. Her works and positions influenced currents of Nazi esotericism, radical environmentalism, and sectors of the contemporary far right. Active before and during World War II, Savitri Devi worked as a propagandist and carried out intelligence activities on behalf of the Axis powers in India, in addition to collaborating with pro‑Germany networks and newspapers. After the conflict she maintained contacts with neo‑Nazi circles, was a founder of the World Union of National Socialists, and faced trials and custody in Germany for promoting Nazism. Alongside her political activism, she was notable for campaigning for animal rights and for vegetarianism, positions she wove into her religious and ethical outlook. Her legacy is controversial: her ideas continue to be referenced in niches of the far right and political esotericism while being widely condemned for their racist and antisemitic content.
