Séraphine Louis, known as Séraphine de Senlis, was a self-taught French painter associated with the naïf style. Born into humble circumstances, she worked as a housemaid and at the convent of the Sisters of Providence, a discreet life that contrasted with her intense, secretive artistic production. Her work was discovered in the 1910s by the collector Wilhelm Uhde, who supported her and enabled the creation of large canvases. Séraphine’s paintings are notable for dense, repeated floral arrangements, a vibrant palette and waxy-looking surfaces; she prepared pigments using her own recipes which she kept secret. Between the late 1920s and early 1930s she gained some visibility in exhibitions organized by Uhde, but the economic crisis and the loss of his support disrupted her activity. Committed to a psychiatric hospital in 1932 for a mental disorder, she stopped painting and lived in poverty until her death in 1942. Her work regained posthumous attention, was included in exhibitions devoted to the modern primitives and inspired the 2008 biographical film, helping secure recognition of her singular contribution to French naïf art.
