Shammi Kapoor, born Shamsher Raj Kapoor, was an Indian actor and director who became one of the leading figures of Hindi cinema from the 1950s to the 1970s. Coming from the influential Kapoor family, he built a prolific career in more than a hundred films, noted for his charismatic leading roles, inventive dancing and box-office appeal. His artistic peak came in the 1960s with romantic and musical hits such as Junglee, Teesri Manzil and An Evening in Paris, which established his image as a dancing heartthrob and an innovator in on-screen choreography.
He received critical recognition and awards, including the Filmfare Award for Best Actor for Brahmachari (1968) and later the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor for Vidhaata. Around the turn of the 1970s he gradually moved into supporting roles, working with later generations of stars and expanding his artistic reach by directing films such as Manoranjan and Bundal Baaz, works that, while not major commercial successes, were noted for their aesthetic daring.
Beyond his film career, he is remembered for influencing dance and style in Indian cinema, leaving a lasting legacy in popular culture and within the extended Kapoor acting family. His presence remained visible through later appearances, including his final role in Rockstar (2011).
