Shashi Tharoor is a prominent Indian politician, career diplomat and author. Trained in international relations with a doctorate from the Fletcher School, he began a long career at the United Nations in 1978, where he headed communications and public information and rose to the rank of Under-Secretary-General. He led communications operations in sensitive moments — including initiatives on antisemitism and Islamophobia after September 11 — and coordinated the organization’s multilingual efforts.
In 2006 he was India’s endorsed candidate for UN Secretary-General, finishing second in the selection. He retired from the UN in 2007 and in 2009 entered Indian politics with the Indian National Congress; since then he has represented Thiruvananthapuram in the Lok Sabha, served as Minister of State for External Affairs and chaired parliamentary committees related to communications.
An award-winning author of fiction and non-fiction since 1981, Tharoor is widely noted for his scholarship and command of English. He founded the All India Professionals Congress and has left a mark at the intersection of international diplomacy, public communication and national political life.
