Sigvard Oscar Fredrik Bernadotte was a prominent Swedish industrial designer and a member of the royal family who became known both for his work and for controversies over his titles. The son of the future king Gustaf VI Adolf, he graduated in political science and art history before turning to design, studying at the Konstfack school and becoming the first member of the Bernadotte house to earn an academic degree. His career included long collaborations with the Danish firm Georg Jensen and the 1950 founding of the Bernadotte & Bjørn studio in Copenhagen. He designed several iconic industrial pieces: the “Bernadotte” collection in an Art Deco vein, the Margrethe bowl, the EKA Swede 38 knife, the Red Clara can opener and the Facit Private typewriter model. In 1964 he opened his own studio, Bernadotte Design AB, and his work ranged from everyday objects to accessories, exerting influence on twentieth‑century Scandinavian design. Sigvard’s public life was also marked by the loss of succession rights and royal titles upon his marriage in 1934, and by later disputes over the use and recognition of Luxembourgish noble titles. Honored with awards such as the Order of the Elephant and the Order of the Polar Star, he left a lasting legacy in functional design and the manufacture of utilitarian objects.
