Sonia Rykiel was a French fashion designer and writer best known for revolutionizing women’s knitwear. In the 1960s she created the iconic Poor Boy Sweater — a slim, functional garment that brought her attention after appearing on the cover of Elle and attracted high‑profile clients such as Audrey Hepburn. Her work with knit fabrics and innovations like exposed seams and intentionally unfinished hems earned her the nickname “Queen of Knits.”
In 1968 she founded the eponymous label and opened her first boutique on the Left Bank in Paris; over the following decades the house expanded into menswear and children’s clothing, accessories and fragrances, becoming an international brand sold at hundreds of outlets. Rykiel was also an early adopter of mail‑order partnerships and commercial collaborations that broadened the brand’s reach.
Beyond fashion, she worked as a writer, publishing novels, essays and books on fashion from 1979 onward, and took part in cultural and film projects. Her personal image — from her red hair to a preference for practical, understated looks — established a recognisable aesthetic. In 2012 she made public her battle with Parkinson’s disease, which led to her death in 2016.
