Sophie of Brandenburg-Ansbach-Kulmbach was a princess of Brandenburg-Ansbach who, by marriage, became Duchess of Legnica (Liegnitz) in the early 16th century. A daughter of Margrave Frederick the Elder and Sophia of Poland, she belonged to a dynastic network that connected the Hohenzollerns with Polish royal houses, strengthening her family’s political standing within the Holy Roman Empire. She married Duke Frederick II of Legnica in 1518. The couple’s presence at the Silesian court is commemorated in local architecture: the Renaissance portal of the Piast Castle in Legnica displays busts of Sophie and Frederick, and their likenesses also appear in the stained glass of the Church of Our Lady, attesting to their symbolic role in promoting patronage and dynastic visibility. From their union came heirs who continued the ruling line in Silesia, among them Frederick III and George II, whose later marriages consolidated regional alliances. Sophie thus fulfilled the traditional dynastic role of her class—maintaining political and succession ties—and left material and iconographic traces that shaped Legnica’s heritage.
