Sri Aurobindo (Aurobindo Ghose) was an influential Indian philosopher, poet, nationalist leader and spiritual guide. Initially active in India’s independence movement, he held posts in the civil service and became one of the prominent voices of Bengali nationalism; he was arrested in the famous Alipore Conspiracy case, during which he described mystical experiences that changed the course of his life. From 1910 he gave up active politics and settled in Pondicherry, where he developed the philosophy and practice known as Integral Yoga (or supramental yoga). His work proposes the transformation of human nature and the evolution of consciousness toward a “divine life” on Earth, integrating spiritual and material dimensions. Among his major writings are The Life Divine, The Synthesis of Yoga and the epic poem Savitri, as well as commentaries on the Vedas, Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita. In 1926 he founded an ashram that consolidated his spiritual influence, together with Mirra Alfassa (“The Mother”). Recognized both for his literary output and his religious and cultural impact, he was nominated for the Nobel Prize on several occasions and left a lasting legacy on modern Indian spiritual thought.
