Steven Severin (born Steven John Bailey) is an English musician, composer, multi-instrumentalist and producer, best known for cofounding and serving as the bassist of the influential rock group Siouxsie and the Banshees. Over two decades with the band he was actively involved in songwriting and lyrics, helping shape a sound that blended post-punk, gothic and electronic experimentation; he recorded 11 studio albums with the group and, after the band dissolved in 1996, began overseeing the catalogue and selecting tracks for reissues. Alongside his work with the Banshees, Severin worked as a producer and collaborator on other artists’ projects, including Altered Images, Lydia Lunch and Marc Almond, and formed the side project The Glove with Robert Smith; their album Blue Sunshine (1983) drew on psychedelic and experimental references that anticipated elements of his later work. After the 1990s, Severin released instrumental material and soundtracks, founded the RE: label and devoted himself to ambient albums and live performances, often accompanying silent films. His career is notable for sustained creative activity and influence on the post-punk and alternative scenes, and he has continued composing and releasing records regularly.
