Sybil Leek was an English author, occultist and astrologer whose public work made her a central figure in the esoteric imagination of the 20th century. Trained in her family’s traditional knowledge—astrology, herbal lore and psychic practices passed down by ancestors—she published more than sixty books on magic, witchcraft and occultism, as well as volumes of poetry and memoir. Her career included work as an antiques dealer and spiritual leadership within pagan circles: she served as a priestess in covens in England and abroad and belonged to communities that practiced ritual and folk knowledge. Her visibility increased through radio and television interviews and appearances, especially after she shifted part of her career to the United States, where she collaborated with investigators of psychic phenomena. Known for firm positions—opposed to the use of entheogens in ritual and to nudity in ceremonies, and an advocate for environmental causes—her stance provoked controversy within the occult movement. Sybil Leek’s legacy lies in her extensive written work and in bringing esoteric practices to a wider public, which helped shape the image of the “witch” in English and international popular culture.
