T. Berry Brazelton was an American pediatrician, prolific author, and creator of the Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale (NBAS), an innovative tool for evaluating not only the physical and neurological responses of newborns but also their emotional well‑being and individual differences. By turning behavioral observations into a “portrait” of the infant, the NBAS helped parents and professionals identify strengths and vulnerabilities and adjust caregiving practices during the first months of life.
Trained in medicine and affiliated with leading hospitals before a later academic appointment at Harvard Medical School, Brazelton combined primary pediatric care with child psychiatry and in 1972 founded a child development unit devoted to training and research. He chaired scientific societies and served on national commissions focused on child policy and family support.
Author of dozens of books and hundreds of articles, he also appeared on television programs and in public campaigns about parenting, influencing both health professionals and the general public. His legacy lies in emphasizing early communication between infant and caregiver and promoting practices that recognize the newborn as an active, social being from birth.
