Taj Mahal, the stage name of Henry Saint Clair Fredericks Jr., is an American singer, guitarist and songwriter known for renewing the blues through dialogue with other musical traditions. Self-taught and a multi-instrumentalist, he built a decades-long career by fusing blues with rhythms from the Caribbean, West Africa, reggae, zydeco, jazz and gospel, expanding the genre’s boundaries and influencing later generations. Rooted in the 1960s folk and blues scene, he rose to prominence with early albums such as Taj Mahal, The Natch’l Blues and Giant Step, which established him as an authentic, modern blues voice. He has worked on a variety of projects, from film soundtracks (including Sounder) to collaborations with artists across traditions, and has explored regional sounds over the decades. A two-time Grammy winner with other honors as well, Taj Mahal is also regarded as a student of the blues’ roots, bringing ethnomusicological knowledge into his work. His legacy lies in revitalizing traditional repertoire and opening paths to a more global approach to the blues.
