Theodore Robert Cowell was an American serial killer who kidnapped, raped, and murdered several young women in the 1970s and possibly earlier. After nearly a decade of denial, before his execution in 1989, he confessed to thirty homicides in seven states, from 1974 to 1978. The total number of victims is unknown.
Bundy was considered a handsome and charismatic man, traits he used to gain the trust of his victims and of society. Bundy approached his victims in public places, feigning injury or disability, or pretending to be an authority figure, before attacking them, rendering them unconscious, and taking them to secluded locations to rape them and then kill them. Sometimes he returned to the crime scenes, arranging the area and having sex with the decomposing corpses until the stage of putrefaction or other events, such as wild animals disturbing the bodies, prevented him from continuing. He decapitated at least twelve victims and kept some of the heads in his apartment as souvenirs. On some occasions, he broke into his victims' homes at night and beat them while they slept.
Biographer Ann Rule, who had worked with Bundy, described him as 'a sadistic sociopath who took pleasure in the pain of other human beings and the control he exercised over his victims, to the point of death, and even afterward.' Once, Bundy self-proclaimed himself 'the coldest-hearted son of a bitch you have ever met.' Attorney Polly Nelson, a member of his final defense team, wrote that he was 'the very definition of heartless evil.'
