Ted Marchibroda was an American football player and coach whose professional career spanned decades, with his greatest prominence as a head coach in the National Football League (NFL). As a player, he was a quarterback in the 1950s for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Chicago Cardinals, gaining the experience that led him to move into coaching.
As a coach, he became a central figure in franchise turnarounds: he took over the Baltimore Colts in 1975 and engineered one of the league’s biggest recoveries, guiding the team from 2–12 to 10–4 and a division title that same year, and returning the club to the playoffs in subsequent seasons. His tenure with the Colts was also marked by conflicts with management and later struggles that led to firings and organizational restructuring.
He later returned to lead the franchise after its move to Indianapolis from 1992 to 1995 and joined the Baltimore Ravens organization in 1996, earning the unusual distinction of having been head coach in both eras of professional football in Baltimore. Over his career as a head coach he compiled a record of 87 wins, 98 losses and one tie, with two playoff appearances.
