Théodore de Banville was a 19th-century French poet, known for his technical virtuosity and his defense of the beauty of versification. A late Romantic, he became a central figure of the Parnassian movement, which valued form and aesthetic perfection, and he influenced subsequent generations, especially the Symbolists. His early work, Les Cariatides (1842), shows echoes of Victor Hugo, while collections such as Odes funambulesques (1857) and Esquisses parisiennes (1859) confirmed his reputation.
Also an author of studies on poetic technique, Banville published the Petit traité de poésie française (1871), in which he sets out his view of rhyme as an essential element of French verse and explores fixed forms traditionally neglected—sonnets, ballades and rondos—reviving older models with formal refinement. From these practices he became notable for recovering and renewing classical metrics.
Over the course of his career he also produced short stories, novellas and various anthologies, contributing to journals such as the Parnasse contemporain. His notability rests on the balance between metrical erudition and delicate imagination; his legacy is a technical influence on French poetry and the revaluation of fixed forms in the 19th-century canon.
